Until the reign of King Rama IV (1851-1868), most Thais went barefoot. However, the domestic shoe industry received the biggest push by the government of the military dictator and prime minister of Thailand, Field Marshal Pleak Pibulsonggram, under the propaganda to increase the pace of modernistic in Thailand that all Thais at the time must wear Western dress, salute the flag, and wear shoes in public. In the following decades, as the industry grew not only according to the domestic demand, but also the international one. In 1979, many factories were started to manufacture under international brand name, until 1980s where industry were dropped because the cost of production in Thailand was no longer cheaper than our neighbor developing countries. Although the change in business climate had forced many companies to be out of the business, however, for those who can survive have been adjusting the strategy into producing more value-added product, and putting more afford into the creation of shoes under their own brand names. Since 2007, Thai brands like "Maneesilp" and "Pring" have stepped their feet into international fashion arena, by opening shops in Paris and Milan to search for their place in the affordable luxury sector.
